The possibilities with this game are endless. Students will be focussing on reading CVC words while playing this game, either in a group or on their own. This game is great for reading groups and can be played independently.
Version1: Choose a vowel sound board and cards. Each player has their own coloured counter. One person (or the teacher) is the caller. That person has all of the word cards. The other players sit around the board (enlarge to A3 if you like). The caller picks a card and reads the word. Students have to look for the correct picture. The first person to find it puts their counter on it. At the end of the game, the student with the most coloured counters is the winner.
Version 2: The caller says the word in sounds (stump – s/t/u/m/p). Students have to put the word back together and find the picture.
Version 3: Place all of the word cards facing down. Students take turns picking up a card and reading it. If they can read it and find the picture they can put their counter on the picture. If they can not read the card, it goes back down for another student to try.
Students can also play this game on their own. This resource is easy to prepare. Simply print, laminate and cut out the word cards and you are ready to go.
If you like this game, but want to challenge students more, I have another version in my store.
