This collection of twenty informative text passages was created to give young readers an opportunity to read informative text and respond to it. These passages are rigorous and high-interest passages that align to social studies and science curriculum. They give teachers the perfect text to use as a writing prompt for students. There are five comprehension questions for each passage of text. Students are also given the opportunity to write additional questions they may have about the topic after reading, which may be used to assess comprehension. This packet of text incorporates the following text features: a bold heading, factual information, a picture, and a caption. This collection includes twenty passages: four for January, four for February, four for March, four for April, and four for May.
The following topics are explored in this collection:
Martin Luther King, Jr.
Little Blue Penguins
April Fool's Day
When I use these passsages for instruction, I sometimes require my students to add detail to the picture and/or label parts of the picture in order to demonstrate their understanding of each text. This packet includes a color-coded answer key for each document which highlights where in the text each answer is found. It is a perfect collection of text for the second semester of any K-2 grade level. This collection reinforces the concept of "proving your answers" with evidence from the text, and drawing conclusions through inferencing. These passages can be used with whole group instruction, small group instruction, or as a literacy center. Clipart is courtesy of www.mycutegraphics.com.
