With Common Core standards and the need for students to provide text evidence, comes the need for lots of practice with reading comprehension skills.
I found that if I could encompass reading practice in short units which were interesting to my students, they did mind answering questions, doing short writing projects or practicing vocabulary. It all became part of learning about a new, exciting topic.
It gave me the opportunity to go back and do the part of teaching I loved….to inspire my students, while at the same time giving them that extra needed practice towards meeting the standards.
