A full year of weekly activities that challenge children to develop fluency with words. Students read as many words as they can in one minute, trying to beat their own best record. Each week the word list targets a specific spelling pattern. The targets build in complexity as the year goes on and meet Common Core standards for reading foundational skills.
My kids love trying again and again to get faster and faster. It is such a thrill when they can “Read-it In a Minute!” As they study the spelling pattern and learn to see how it works within words, they begin to recognize the words more quickly. With repeated readings, their fluency begins to increase and so does their confidence!
You don't have to time students if you don't want to. There are many ways to use these word lists to develop fluency without using the one minute deadline. This is just one way to check for fluency with each phonetic spelling pattern.
The lessons follow the sequence of phonics instruction for second grade. You can use them weekly throughout the year, or select the ones that are just right for your students at the time you need them. You can use them in class with individuals, small groups or even the whole class. Kids love it and you will too!
