I am constantly looking for ways to motivate my students to learn their sight words and become fluent readers of sight word sentences.
I came up with this “Read the Rainbow” activity that is perfect for spring time!
The set of 225 sight words is divided by the colors of the rainbow. You begin with the Violet Set at the bottom of the rainbow.
As each student is able to fluently read the sight word sentences on each chart, you will have them color in the boxes. When the entire chart has been colored in, the student gets to color in that arc on the rainbow and progress to the next set of words. The red set is the last set and the rainbow will be completed.
When a student completes his/her rainbow, he/she is rewarded with a small bag of Skittles or a package of Rainbow Airhead Extremes. If your school has a policy against
rewarding with sweet treats, you could print the attached certificate or purchase some
reward “gold coins” from a vendor such as Oriental Trading.
