Encouraging learners to become active readers helps tremendously with students being able to talk about what they read upon finishing. Marking up a text is a strategy even the youngest readers can begin using to become actively involved with what they are reading.
Reading from printed/photocopied text?

Reading a paperback or hardcover book?
Quickly jot on Post-it note flags and then stick them on!
Reading on an iPad?
Take a screen shot. Open it and annotate in another app!
Simply print, laminate, and cut apart these "Read with your Pencil" bookmarks before handing them out to students, and then enjoy the conversations that are to follow.
