This format helps my students carefully analyze a fraction before comparing. I have my students always thinking in terms of what they notice and know before they choose an appropriate strategy. Each step follows the "Read:Draw:Write" approach to problem solving. The toolbox is there to remind them of all the possible strategies they have learned in our lessons. I use this to help assess their thinking and understanding of the concept. I have used this template for individual assessment, to model during lessons. It can also be used effectively when students are working in pairs.
