This 3-in-one activity focuses on a wonderful poem by the poet Louise Gluck entitled "Gratitude," coupled with reflective creative writing plus grammar review with original sentences, thus combining both a mini-lesson on original poetry writing plus reading and grammar practice all at one engaging low cost!
In assigning students to compose their own poetry, we are urging students to move into the Common Core Standards of 21st Century Skills, including communication, creativity, and critical thinking; they ALSO are being pushed into the higher levels of Bloom's Taxonomy (eg. moving beyond basic comprehension to application, analysis, evaluation, AND synthesis/creating)!
This is a fun method to help our future college students to not only read higher-level contemporary poetry, but also to prepare for standardized testing by applying reading strategies and standardized grammar/conventions.
