This creed is intended to infuse a class with a sense of collective responsibility for the learning outcomes of the individuals and groups within it. I created it to help create the understanding that every learner is accountable for his or her own learning, but is also accountable to the group--distracting behaviors and lack of focus hurt everyone. To give a positive spin to the need for behavior modification, this creed was born.
I am using this creed currently in a 2nd grade classroom where the students were not taking seriously our time together as readers and writers. We are reciting the creed in call-and-response pattern by phrases, and immediately after it is done, we begin our interactive read-aloud for the day. Already I am noting an increased level of community and focus. I'll continue to watch how this works for us...
This creed has wide applicability across grade levels, as it is a call to see literacy as more than teacher-directed activities. It is a call for students to see literacy as life-giving, capacity-building, skill-enhancing empowerment. Great for shared reading, community-building and routines. Use it as you see fit to help students begin to redefine themselves in the context of a community of serious learners!
