The Reader Response Journal Activity Packet is designed to provide students with an easy way to respond to texts they have read and engage in a deeper-level of understanding of texts.
What is Included in this Packet?
This packet includes reader response journal pages that can be printed and given to students to be used to write their reader response using. This packet also includes "posters" or personal-sized anchor charts that students can use to help them formulate and write a high-quality reader response. The personal-sized anchor charts that are included are:
All student helper pages are in black and white which makes for easy printing and photocopying.
Assembling the Reader Response Journal:
There are multiple ways that you can assemble the reader response journal. A cover page is included to serve as the “title page” for the journal. You can have students take a new sheet each week and place their reader responses, when finished, in a duotang, or small binder.
If your school has a binding machine, or you can get journals bound for a low cost, you can also have the journal made this way. If I am choosing to assemble the journal in this way, I would ensure that there are approximately 40 weeks of sheets available for students to use. You can also include the helper sheets as well (i.e., the “Reader Response Topic Helper”).
You can also choose to not assemble the journal in a typical journal format and instead have students hand in their individual responses each week. You can binder clip together the responses, and store them in a file system.
Reader Response Formats:
Format 1 – Dialogue with the Teacher: The first version has the student have a dialogue with the teacher about what they have been reading, and what they notice about the text (i.e., text elements, text structure). Once the student has written their response, you are asked to use the grading grid to grade their response and write comments or questions about their response or the text they are reading using the space provided for you. Students are then asked to show some kind of response using their given second space on the template. There are several versions of this reader response journal template included in this packet.
Format 2 – Double-Entry Journal Dialogue with the Teacher: The second format is similar to the first format, however there are two sides to the reader response journal. The left side of the journal entry is where students pick out a passage, quote, or write notes about text elements, or text structure that stands out to them. What students write down on this side must be incorporated into their reader response which is completed on the right side of the journal page. Once the student has written their response, you are asked to use the grading grid to grade their response and write comments or questions about their response or the text they are reading using the space provided for you. Students are then asked to show some kind of response using their given second space on the template. There are several versions of this reader response journal template included in this packet.
Format 3 – Student to Student Response: The third format has students respond to each other’s reader responses and ask questions or make comments and connections to the response they have read. Students do not have to be reading the same book, but they do have to comment appropriately on their peers’ reader response. This format is similar to the teacher-student dialogue, however, students are responding to each other and engaging in a dialogue about features of a text, text structure, text elements and so on. There are several versions of this reader response journal template included in this packet.
