This rubric can be used to assess the various elements of a reader response journal entry.
How I use the rubric: My students regularly take part in reader response as a part of the curriculum. A couple days a week, they engage in Sustained Silent Reading, and then in their reader response journal, they respond in writing to what they read. Effective reader response writing has to be explicitly taught and modeled repeatedly at the beginning of the year. However, it takes only a couple of weeks before students catch on and become comfortable with writing good responses. I collect the journals about once a month and choose one or two of their best responses to grade. The rubric is stapled in the back of their journal. It allows me to accurately grade their writing and helps them to recognize their areas of strength and need.
