Product Description
Reader's Response Journal
*Aligned to Journeys Target Reading Skills for both Literature and Informational Text (includes all target skills for grades 3-5). Differentiated for On/Above Level and Below Level (both Literature and Informational sets for each)

Purpose of the RRJ: Students internalize the targeted reading skill while reading independently and demonstrate their understanding through a written response.

How: Teachers teach and model the targeted reading skill. Students identify the response prompt in their RRJ that corresponds to the target skill. Throughout the week, students jot notes (sticky notes work best) to track their thinking while reading a self-selected or teacher's choice book. Students use the notes ("stickies") to build their response.

The RRJ can be an independent exercise, it can be used for guided practice in small groups, or as a whole group activity depending on the needs of your students. Students should not be expected to jump into the RRJ process without seeing it modeled first. I suggest taking one week to go through what it looks like to jot notes based on the focus skill as you read (e.g. Understanding Characters: jot down character traits, memorable quotes by a character, actions, etc.) and use them to write a response to the prompt.

If your school does not use Journeys, the Reader's Response Journal can still be for you! The RRJ contains questioning prompts for the following reading skills:
