"Reader's Response Journals" are a great tool to use to assess what students are reading and learning during their independent reading time. This document is a set of labels that include thinking or sentence stems that students refer to when completing their journal each day. Just stick them on the inside cover of the journal that students use and they can refer to them again and again all year long! Some ideas for journals are composition books, spiral notebooks, 3 ring binders, stapled pages, etc. My first graders were able to be much more independent with their response journals after I gave them these thinking stems.
This document has 3 columns of the same thinking stems, with different fonts. So this page will work to fill three student journals.
Thanks for taking a look!
