Included you will find a sample reader's response letter, a rubric for grading student letters, and a checklist for students to keep track of what is required. They can use this model and checklist to generate independent reading letters, or letters related to their literature circle groups.
I find these letters as a great way to gain insight on how my students are comprehending various genres. I will occasionally give them a focus for their letters to target a specific skill or strategy. I also use this in conjunction with tracking thoughts throughout their reading as well. The rubric is also a good tool to use as a grade for both group work, and the letter. I have included both a rubric to use with peer evaluation, and one to use by itself.
