If you are searching for a way to get your students to enjoy reading, become more expressive, read aloud with confidence, become more fluent…then let the magic begin!!
I have found using Reader’s Theater with large and small groups really helps my students strengthen their reading and language arts skills! My class CHEERS every time I tell them we are going to do Reader’s Theater!! This technique makes reading come alive for your students and can really develop classroom full of confident readers! It is especially important that the stories are fun and engaging!
Reader’s Theater is a great way to reach the individual needs of a variety of students at one time! Accelerated readers can continue to develop expressive reading, and develop or expand their vocabulary. Struggling readers are real legitimate reason to read aloud and to re-read. Collaborating with peers is one of the most appealing features of Readers Theatre; students did not feel alone as they read, they did not have to read the whole text, and they experienced breaks between their reading.
This Reader’s Theater script is adapted from a great story called Kit Carson: American Folk Hero by Phillip Johns. This Reader’s Theater has parts for 3 readers.

When Kit Carson wasn't out exploring, he lived on a small farm.
One day, the famous frontiersman decided to surprise his wife with eggs and fish for breakfast. Arising early, he went down to the henhouse and collected some eggs.
On the way back, he stopped at the pond and landed a magnificent large-mouth bass.
He wasn't sure how to carry everything, then he had an idea. He carefully dropped the eggs inside the fish and started for home.
Suddenly, the Western hero found himself confronted by a mean, hungry wolf. Fearing that he might become a meal for the canine, he threw the bass aside and hurried up a nearby tree.
From there, he watched as the wolf grabbed his fish and eggs and ran off.
When Carson got back home empty handed, he related the adventure to Mrs. Carson.
She responded. "You shouldn't have put all your eggs in one bass, Kit."
