PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

Originally published in Scholastic's Storyworks magazine. Here's another compelling and historically-accurate Read Aloud Play from the Civil Rights Movement. "Gonna Let it Shine" tells the true story of Sheyann Webb, "Martin Luther King's youngest freedom fighter." In 1965, eight-year-old Sheyann joined the Selma, Alabama, Voting Rights Campaign and was on the front lines during the "Bloody Sunday" events on the Edmund Pettus Bridge. Suitable for reader's theater or full stage production, this eight page script is embedded with freedom songs from the actual Movement. Use it with students in grades 4 through 8 to build fluency, satisfy the CCSs, and celebrate Black History Month. Includes a free Common Core activity sheet and answer key. An earlier version of this play appeared in the January 2012 issue of Scholastic's Storyworks magazine under the title "Pigtails and Protests." You can also use it in conjunction with the Disney film about Sheyann, "Selma, Lord, Selma," and where appropriate for older students, in conjunction with the Oprah Winfrey film, "Selma." Thanks!
