Reader’s Theater is a powerful tool that teachers can use to develop reading fluency. “Fluency is the ability to read quickly and accurately while at the same time using expression and proper phrasing.”
This mini unit was developed to help teachers weave reader’s theater into their classroom throughout the year. This document contains a 5 day cycle that you can begin this at the beginning of the year and continue weekly. There is a list of mentor texts that you can order if you choose, but you may use any resources that are available to you. It is not necessary to have the books listed within the unit. Each week you will teach the same teaching points but you will cycle in new scripts students can use to practice these skills.
This mini unit is complemented by a 7 day reader's theater unit in which students work in small groups to put on a play. Check out the Reader's Theater 7-day Mini-Unit if you like this shared reading unit.
