Readers Theater is an integrated approach for involving students in reading, writing, listening, and speaking activities. The purpose of this activity is to engage students through literature by allowing them to explore the historical significance of the Boston Tea Party, as well as examining the differing perspectives of England and the Colonies.
Using readers theater allows students to share and develop an appreciation for literature by reading aloud, performing with a purpose, and working collaboratively. I wrote this script with my 4th grade class in mind, however, it is written in Word format so it can be quickly adapted to any grade level. We performed this play several times in class and we actually ended up creating props and making costumes so that we could perform it in front of the entire school for our end of year spotlight!
14 speaking roles including King George and Samuel Adams!
Written using humor but in a way that addresses the key issues surrounding the Boston Tea Party.
Use over and over in class while switching roles. I found that the more we acted out the script the more animated and engaged the students became!
