The Tortoise and The Hare Differentiated Reader’s Theater and More
A Great Addition to Any Fable Unit

This Packet was designed to be used when teaching fables. The activities included can stand alone or can be used to enrich a fable unit that is already in place. I have used the Tortoise and the Hare Reader’s Theaters as Guided Reading introducing the leveled stories to each prescribed group and then rereading them coaching skills as needed and designing activities that each group might need. Then the groups practice at specified times after Guided Reading. The groups made puppets and presented the fables to each other and at times we have also presented them to other classes and parents. This was and is such a great way to practice fluency with primary students!!!

Here is what is included in this packet:

5 Differentiated adapted versions of The Tortoise and the Hare which you can read and decide which text works best for each group. One was specifically created for ELL students who struggled a bit with reading.

4 Letter writing activities that encourage children to persuade, give an opinion and advice to the Hare or Tortoise.

A Compare/Contrast Craftivity in which students compare and contrast character traits and physical traits of the Tortoise and the Hare which can also be used as a bulletin board display.

A Venn Diagram to use to compare and contrast the characters.

Tortoise and Hare Can, Has, Is sheets to fill in thinking about the fable or if you want to get into nonfiction, you can use them to learn about tortoises and hares.

Puppet templates to use for props for the Reader’s Theater presentations.

Antonym cards to use in a station where the student matches antonyms and then fills in a sheet.

Scrambled sentence sheet to unscramble sentence that discuss parts of the story.

Math word problem sheet using time.

A critical thinking sheet which asks the students to take what they know about tortoises and hares and explain why they think a hare is faster than a tortoise and to explain their thinking.

We enjoyed enriching our learning with these activities!!!

Thank you for downloading, browsing, following, and inspiring. I hope this brings a little sunshine into your day! ENJOY!
