Looking for a way to promote fluency in reading and engage your little readers? This growing bundle of Reader’s Theater is a great way to support and develop reading, writing, speaking, and listening in your Kindergarten and/or First Grade students…..AND it is differentiated to include 4 different reading levels.

Timeless Tales Included:

  • The Little Red Hen
  • Stone Soup
  • Little Red Riding Hood
  • The Gingerbread Man
  • Hansel and Gretel
  • The Elves and the Shoemaker
  • Jack and the Beanstalk
  • The Ugly Duckling
  • Goldilocks and the Three Bears
  • The Three Little Pigs

Differentiated Reading Levels:

There are four levels of Reader's Theaters included. Each level increases in difficulty. The emergent reader is great for Kindergarten. Level 1 would be great for end of the year Kindergarten. Level 2 would be perfect for beginning of the year first grade. Level 3 would be great for end of the year in first grade. The different levels make it easy for you to differentiate!

Lesson Plans & Bringing the Story to Life:

A 5-day Shared Reading Lesson Plan provides a step by step guide that will help you introduce the story, complete word work, teach expressive reading, and build fluency.

After the suggested lesson plan is completed, students can work in small groups to practice their parts and prepare to perform the Reader’s Theater in front of the class. I’ve included character hats for the student’s but suggest in the parent letter that the student’s dress up on the day as the character (with the help of parents).

I’ve added an editable parent’s letter to send home in case you wanted to invite parents, family, or friends to watch the performance. In the editable letter, I suggest that you ask for parent participation with creating the ‘set’, but this is not required to make the performance amazing!

Additional Extension Activities:

In addition, I've created "I Can" strips that support phonics and reading concepts (see preview). These can be used on days 2 or 3 to support the literacy focus. Show the ‘I Can’ strip to the students and explain that they will complete this as the group choral reads. Pause as needed to give the students time to complete the activity. Modify as needed.

Students will also have an opportunity to write a letter to their favorite character in the story and draw story elements including the characters and the setting!
