It was Christmas Eve, and while most people were gathering round their fireplaces to sing carols, and open gifts, a small child roamed the city streets alone, seeking shelter.
One bitterly cold New Year’s Eve, a little girl wandered up and down the streets, selling matches.“Matches, Matches’, she could sing out, “Please buy my matches”.
And so begin two stories about Christmas, but not the glittering, tearing open presents, stuff with turkey kind of Christmas story, but the kind that reminds us of the real reason for Christmas .... the birth of Jesus.
Based on the Hans Christian Anderson story of the Match Girl, and a German Legend for Christmas, these two tales are sure to invite discussion with students about social and ethical issues of abundance and poverty.
Legend for Christmas is scripted for 6 voices and Little Match Girl is scripted for 4 voices.
