Why Reader's Theatre??
Based on current research, reader’s theatre improves fluency which leads to better comprehension. Since I teach intervention groups, I decided to increase fluency and comprehension during intervention time using Reader’s Theatre scripts. I could not believe how much my students gained on their STAR reading benchmark tests. Reader’s Theatre is a hit in my classroom. I was so excited about the progress of my students that I decided to create reader’s theatre scripts using my favorite books. Since we drive AR at our school, I felt it was important to include the book's Accelerated Reader quiz number, book level, and points available.
Consider the quotes below when deciding to use reader’s theatre in your classroom.
"If you want to get your kids reading with comprehension, expression, fluency, and joy," affirms children's book specialist, Instructor columnist, and RT proponent Judy Freeman, "there's nothing more effective than reader's theater."
Tim Rasinki, a professor at Kent State University points out “Research has demonstrated that practiced reading or repeated reading does lead to significant gains in fluency, which is a key element in effective reading programs.”
