This is a wonderful Reader's Theatre/ Full Class Play for Preschool through 2nd grade. It uses simple language, word patterns, and short sentences making this a beautiful compliment to the script (also available on my page for free) from the popular book- "The Very Hungry Caterpillar".
This original play uses the very basic story of a gardener planting seeds to explore the valuable lesson of self-love. It teaches us that when we grow to be the ‘flower we are meant to be’ (our true nature)—the world wins! These characters learn the process of planting and caring for a garden with good soil, water, and sunlight. They also learn a deeper truth that their only job-in this life-is to simply be themselves.
It is the intention of this script to inspire aliveness, bring joy into the classroom with a collaborative project, build confidence in reading and speaking, and plant a ‘seed’ of value into the hearts and minds of all the ‘flowers’ out there.
Enjoy this project and have a ton of fun creating your nature’s true garden in your classroom!
Some ideas for using this script:
• Reading Centers
• Full Class Show/Project
• End of year/Graduation Parent Performance
• Simple story to read in class and vision by drawing pictures of what your flowers would look like.
• Self-expression exercise-beginning to write about the self
• Self-esteem building project/Promoting friendship and working together
• Puppet show
It is written for 13 students but these lines can easily be divided up for more players. Be as creative as you want and let those true natures out!! There can be multiple gardeners (almost like narrators) and the lines can be said by switching back and forth. You can also add more flowers and play around with what their ‘true natures’ are as well as their gifts. You could have the whole class come up with what they think their true nature is and what gifts they would give the world. You can create a whole garden in the classroom and this project can inspire an actual planting project as well. ☺
