Start the year off right by organizing your Reader’s Workshop. First, we’ve created two (2) sets of genre posters. One set simply identifies the genres covered in Grades 3 – 5. This set was created to assist with organizing your classroom library books by genre. The second set was created for students to use as a resource in their Reading notebooks. This second set of posters (for students) can serve as unit dividers and/or a reference resource, since it includes both the genre and its definition. Both poster sets are in black and white, which facilitates easy copying.
Also included is an overview of Reader’s Workshop Units of Study Topics for Grades 3 – 5. As special education teachers (In-Class Support) who find themselves working across grade levels, it’s been helpful to know which units are taught at which grade level. Lastly, we’ve created two basic organizers. The “Student Reading Log” allows students to keep track of their independent reading time. The “Teacher/Student Reading Conference Record Sheet” is a simple, yet effective, way to track student progress while working in Reader’s Workshop. This one page record sheet (front and back) allows you to collect data on fluency, comprehension skills, and use of post-it notes. The record sheet also has a place to set future student goals, and to note student strengths and/or weaknesses. Both these forms come in very handy at both report card and conference time, and serves as documentation of student progress.
