Included in this download are two versions of a response sheet when working on making text-to-self connections while reading. One sheet is targeted to students who have read a book themselves and are making a connection, while the other sheet is to be used when students have listened to a book read aloud and made connections to that piece of literature.
I used both of these response sheets when I taught first grade and found them to be very successful. There is a space included for students to draw a picture of the connection they made, as well as space for them to write about what happened in the text and what that reminded them of in their own lives.
I found that using a graphic organizer such as this was often less intimidating for younger students when writing responses, especially at the beginning of the year. Giving them a framework within which to organize their ideas often helped them get started with their writing process!
