PRODUCT DESCRIPTION

This unit of study focuses on nonfiction (informational) texts. Your goal during this four week unit will be to help students understand how authors and illustrators work together to create informational text and to understand the structure of informational text. You will want to help students make connections between texts and compare information found in two texts on the same topic.
This is a big unit. There is so much to teach. When looking at the Common Core Standards for reading you will notice that there are many standards for informational text. You will definitely want to bring in as much nonfiction as possible during other times of the day and continue to read nonfiction texts for the rest of the year as well.
This unit of study is always a favorite of the students. They get so excited about learning new things. To start off the unit you will want to gather as many nonfiction books as possible to create browsing tubs for the students. It is important for students to be able to interact with informational texts during their private reading time so they can apply what you are teaching them in the mini lessons. Be sure to allow students to add some informational texts to their private reading collections.
We have provided you with virtually everything you will need to teach this unit. There are two texts on flamingos that will be used each week. Be sure to print them and laminate them so they will last well beyond the teaching of this unit. We have also provided several student recording sheets in this packet that can be used during the mini lessons or at a later time in centers or workstations.
By the end of this unit students should be able to maintain their focus during private reading for 20 to 25 minutes. During this private reading time you should be able to independently conference with your students or pull small groups to work on reading strategies or phonics skills.

The unit is broken down into four weeks:
