This is the "Creative Garden" approach to reading comprehension strategies for primary grade students! (Note: These are wonderful to use with beanie babies or other small stuffed animals-- I found many varieties of these cute little creatures on Amazon.com-- but the hands-on element is totally optional). This print-and-use bundle includes colorful "Readers are Thinkers" picture cards with a parent note (I tell the parents to keep this wherever they read with their child at home). It also includes the "why's and how's" of each strategy with colorful pictures (I use these at the beginning of the year as a more detailed explanation for parents and I refer to them myself when teaching the strategies to my students). You'll love the larger strategy cards which even include anchor questions/statements to prompt discussion as you read to/with your class (I attached magnetic tape to the back of each card and I keep the set on my whiteboard for Shared Reading... I have an extra set at my Guided Reading table too!). For Independent Reading, the a smaller quick-reference tool for students' desks is included (these may be laminated and added to reading logs, readers' toolkits, or used as helpful bookmarks as well). Finally, add purpose to your students' nightly reading homework with a Daily Reading Log to help children record and reflect on what they were thinking about as they read. I hope you find this bundle as engaging and useful as I did in my own classroom! I welcome your feedback and thank you so much!
