Readers for Beginners:
These short reading passages will build fluency and comprehension for young, beginning or struggling readers. Included in this resource are 20 short stories. The stories have simple sentences, as well as a picture that supports the reader. Students will develop their fluency by reading the story three times and track it by coloring a star each time. They will also use evidence from the text to answer a question, follow directions to color the picture, find three sight words in the story to hi-lite, and then trace each word. The format remains the same for each story to help students become independent.
You may use these stories in guided reading groups, as independent work, homework, morning work, etc. Do the passages together until you feel confident that your students can do them independently. The order you choose to use these passages will depend upon you and your students. Make copies and staple or bind into booklets or use a single page when needed.
