Reading Across the Curriculum Bundle

Reading is an essential skill for students to develop in all content areas. Help your students do this by giving them regular opportunities to interact with current and relevant text.

This product includes two products: “The Article of the Week Reading Assignment” and “The News Update Bell Ringer Activity.” Each is a high-value assignment that will get your students reading and thinking about the text. When used together, your students are sure to grow into stronger readers!

The Article of the Week Reading Assignment
Believing that students, in general, do not get enough practice reading across content areas, I developed the “Article of the Week” assignment. This assignment provides the student with a short, content-related, current event article to read, annotate, and write a reaction to. Annotating texts is a supremely beneficial skill that our students are probably not getting enough practice developing. The last part of the assignment is to write a short reaction to what the student just read. This drives the student to think more deeply about the content, as well as practice their writing skills.

As a science teacher, I use science-themed articles. Teachers of other content areas can easily adapt this assignment to their courses.

The assignment consists of two parts:
1.Annotating the article provided to demonstrate a close reading of the text.
2.Writing a short response to (not a summary of) the article they just read.

This product guides you through every step of implementing this assignment in your classes. Documents included are:
• The Article of the Week Reading Assignment Instructions (2 pages)
• Article of the Week Document Setup (4 pages)
• Article of the Week Assignment Template (1 page)
• Example Article of the Week (2 pages)
• Example Annotated Article of the Week (2 pages)
• The Article of the Week Scoring Guide Rubric (1 page)
• The Article of the Week Automated Scoring Guide Rubric (1 Excel file)

The News Update Bell Ringer Activity
I started doing “The News Update” bell ringer activity for several reasons:
- I dreaded preparing a bell ringer activity for each class period every day. This activity puts that responsibility on the students.
- I wanted my students to know what is going on in the world. This activity opens a window to the world of your discipline that too often only exists outside of the classroom.
- I wanted my students reading more. This activity provides an opportunity for students to read articles, blogs, and other texts that will enrich their learning experience.
- I wanted to help my students improve their communication skills. This activity gives them practice summarizing information and orally presenting it to an audience of their peers.

Students are assigned a presentation date and a current event article related to your course topic. When the late bell for class rings, the presenting student will walk to the front and begin her presentation.

Not only will your students learn more about your course content area and hone their reading, summarizing, and presentation skills, but you won't need to plan bell ringer activities anymore!

Just imagine how impressive it will be to administrators and fellow teachers that your students start class, not you!

This product includes:

• A comprehensive teacher's guide (including instructions on how to set up and start using this bell ringer activity and what to do about students who forget to prepare or are absent; 3 pages)
• An editable student handout template explaining the assignment requirements (Word file, 1 page)
• Suggested source websites for every content area (including Art, English, Foreign Languages, Health, Math, Science, and Social Studies; 1 page)
• Scoring Guide Checklist (1 page; 2 checklists per page)
• Student schedule template (1 Excel file)

I know this product will add value and depth to your course. Most important, by giving them repeated opportunities to practice, you will be helping your students become stronger readers!
