Includes a pre and post assessment for fiction/poetry to assess the reading comprehension skills: inference and summary. These two common core aligned assessments with common language, texts, and skills allow objective assessment of students. This resource can be used at the beginning and ending of a unit and is PERFECT FOR STATE SLO REQUIREMENTS. Included is an assessment rationale page that many states require for teacher evaluations.
On each assessment, the two poem passages include eight text-dependent open-ended response questions and multiple-choice questions. The first part of the assessment includes interactive movement of a text where students justify their choices in a short answer response.
Using poems as assessment texts allows students to explore quality texts and show their understanding without spending excessive testing time on long reading passages. "Oranges" and "Same Song," the two texts included, are both poems that are in many intermediate textbooks. Both poems are written at the 8th grade level. With easy to score objective rubrics and an answer key with response explanations for each of the multiple questions, the teacher can explain correct answers to students after the test and increase test taking skills.
