This is a great reading assessment to use to guide your instruction with beginning readers. This assessment is also a valuable tool for teachers who have to plan goals and document student progress for the RTI (Response to Intervention) process.
The assessment is divided into 5 reading goals: phonemic awareness, letter name recognition, recognition of letter sounds, recognition of the sounds of letter chunks (diphthongs, digraphs, and r-controlled vowels), and recognition of sight words. Mastering each goal is important to becoming a fluent reader. This assessment has been designed to guide student learning and to help teachers plan for instruction. After the assessment is given, further instruction should be provided in the areas that were not mastered. The cycle of instruction and assessment should continue until all of the goals have been mastered.
