Students are put with one or two others and given a book on their Lexile level and within their interest category. Students take turns reading aloud while the other follows along; during that time I walk around and take notes about individuals fluency to discuss with them during our ongoing private conferences. To ensure students are understanding what they are reading (and hearing) I have compiled a list of assignments that are appropriate for any fiction book (it is preferred that they have about the same number of chapters).
These activities include:
1. Vocabulary acquisition (including the use of context clues)
2. Writing a formal letter
3. Illustrating a scene
4. Making a connection to one's own life
5. Create a list of open-ended discussion questions from the book
