COMPREHENSION
Print 1 set of 32 informational text task cards and 32 literature task cards to use with games 1-12.

(1) Wacky Birds Tic Tac Toe (2 players)
Use with any informational text or literature. Students will read and answer a text task card before marking the X or O on the board. Teacher prep: provide 9 counters (or any tokens to mark X and O), and task cards (pages 23-32).

(2) Wacky Birds Text Challenge (2-6 players)

Use with any informational text or literature. Students will read and answer a text task card before moving around the board. Teacher prep: provide 1 token per player (even bottle caps will work!) and task cards (pages 23-32).

Use with any informational text or literature. Students will read and answer a text task card before marking the board. Teacher prep: provide a supply counters (or any tokens), task cards (pages 23-32).

(9) Surf the Text Board Game (2-6 players)
Use with any informational text or literature. Students will read and answer a text task card before moving around the board. Teacher prep: provide 1 token per player, clear spinner (or pencil and paper clip) and task cards (pages 23-32).

(10) Alien Tic Tac Toe (2 players)
Use with any informational text or literature. Students will read and answer a text task card before marking the X or O on the board. Teacher prep: provide 9 counters (or any tokens to mark X and O), task cards (pages 23-32).

(11) Alien Race to the Top (2-4 players)
Use with any informational text or literature. Students will read and answer a text task card before moving up the board. Teacher prep: provide game board, 1 token per player (even bottle caps will work!) and task cards (pages 23-32).

(12) Alien Text Challenge (2-6 players)

(13) TV News Broadcaster (seat work / presentation 2-6 students)
Use with any informational text or literature. Students will summarize the text you provide (your weekly story, novel, or integrate science or social studies text). Students use speaking and listening skills to present a newscaster’s summary of the text. Cover technology benchmarks by assigning a student created video if technology is available. Fiction and informational text examples are provided on the student instructions. Teacher prep: fold instruction page into a table tent.

Students will write the main idea and details of any text you provide. Teacher prep: print one page per student.

(20) Missing Person Poster with character trait pages (seat work)
Students will create a poster using their knowledge of the character from any story. Includes character trait lists. Teacher Prep: print 1 poster per child and supply character trait reference pages.

FLUENCY, VOCABULARY, PHONICS/SPELLING

(21) Fishing for Fluency (2-6 players)
Students will build word recognition using your sight word or high frequency word cards. Provide two sets and students will play Go Fish! (time-saver: use student created in center #29 & 30). Teacher prep: fold instruction page into a table tent, provide your word cards or student created cards from center #29 & 30.

(22) Vocabulary Password (2-6 players)
One student orally describes the meaning of a vocabulary word. The rest of the group uses listening skills and attempt to guess the word. Teacher prep: fold instruction page into a table tent, provide word list or word cards.

(23) Vocabulary Crossword (seat work)
Students create the definition using letters within the word. Teacher prep: fold instruction page into a table tent, provide word list or word cards

(24) Vivid Vocabulary (2-6 players)
Students draw the word, write definition and sentence on index card. These cards may also be used as word cards for the Vocabulary Password game (#22) and Picture It! (#26). Teacher prep: fold instruction page into a table tent, provide index cards and word list.

(25) Surf the Vocabulary (2-6 players)
Students spin the board to describe the word as instructed (synonym, antonym, use in sentence, act it out silently). Teacher prep: provide word list and clear spinner (or pencil and paper clip).

(26) Picture it! Vocabulary (2-6 players)
One student draws the word and the group will guess the word. Correct student gets a token. Teacher prep: provide tokens, whiteboard, marker, and word list (or cards from Vivid Vocabulary #24).

(27) Be the Teacher! (2-6 players)
Students give each other a spelling quiz with your word list or word cards. Students will grade their work. Grading chart is on the instruction page. Teacher prep: fold instruction page into a table tent, provide paper for quiz, and word list (or cards from center 29/30).

(28) Text a Spelling Word (2 players per page)
Students quiz each other with your word list. Students “text” words on smart phone with dry erase markers. Teacher prep: place smart phone pages in sheet protectors, provide dry erase markers and word list or word cards from center 29/30.

(29 & 30) Rainbow Words / Silly Letters (seat work)
Assign this center on Monday and students will have their own personal set of word cards to use in other spelling centers throughout the week! Teacher prep: cut instruction page in half, provide word list, index cards, and crayons.

(31 & 32) ABC Order / Phonics Pattern Sort (seat work)
Students practice alphabetical order or create a tree map for phonics pattern sorting. Use pencil and paper or student word cards created in center 28/29 for hands-on manipulation). Teacher prep: cut instruction page in half, provide paper and word list (or provide student created cards from centers 28 & 29).

(33) Spelling Baseball (2-6 players)
Each correctly spelled word is a base hit. Student instructions are provided on the game board. Teacher prep: place game board in sheet protector, provide tokens, dry erase markers and word list (or use word cards from centers 28 & 29).

(34) Do You Want to Build a Snowman? phonics (seat work)
Students will classify phonics patterns. Teacher prep: provide word list and one page per student.

(35) Spelling with Space Aliens (2-6 players)
One student reads a word, the group writes it on whiteboards. Correct students get a space token. The child with the most tokens wins. Teacher prep: provide game tokens, dry erase markers, and word list (or use word cards from centers 28 & 29).

WRITING

(36) Author Replacement (seat work)
Midway through the weekly story (or any literature), students will write the last half of story. Teacher Prep: print one instruction page and provide lined paper.

(37) Weird Science (seat work)
Students will rewrite their weekly story (or any literature) with themselves as a major character. Teacher Prep: print one instruction page and provide paper.

(38) Casting Characters (seat work / peer editing)
Students will compare character traits while writing a persuasive essay. Use with character trait list on pages 48 & 49. Teacher prep: print one instruction page and provide lined paper.

(39) Vocabulary and Villains (seat work / peer editing)
Incorporate creative writing with new vocabulary acquisition. Students will use their vocabulary words in a narrative describing a problem and solution. Teacher prep: fold instruction page into a table tent, provide the lined paper or the Vocabulary and Villains writing worksheet.

(40) Once Upon a Time (seat work / peer editing)
Incorporate creative writing with weekly phonics patterns / spelling words. Students will create a fantasy narrative using their spelling words. Students will choose a character and setting listed on the instruction page. Teacher prep: Fold instruction page into a table tent, provide lined paper or the Once Upon a Time writing worksheet.
