These End-of-Novel Centers, Games, and Activities are your hands-on go-to assessments for the end of your favorite novel unit! Designed to be used individually or in a small group, these centers allow students to reflect on the strategies they use while reading and are aligned to the sixth-grade Common Core Standards.

Writing Reactions pg. 4-8
Display the “Writing” sign (5) in your classroom so students know where to go to find the writing prompts (6). Students can choose from 5 prompts to connect, dig deeper, and explore Reasons to Read as they write. “Reasons to Read” (7) were brainstormed by my students; you could brainstorm reasons to read with your students ahead of time. Two different decorative pages (8, 9) are provided so student writing can be displayed for others to read.
Deep Discussion pg. 9-10
Display the “Discussion” sign (10) in your classroom so students know where to go to discuss with their groups. Students discuss what they wrote in the writing center, focus on connecting to each other’s writ-ing, and form opinions instead of just presenting what they wrote. The “Deep Discussions” form (11) can be filled out by each student to ensure that they participate in the discussion.
Comprehension Checkers/Tic Tac Toe pg. 11-22
Display the “Comprehension” sign (12) in your classroom so students know where to go to play the perfect hands-on game for comprehension practice at the end of any novel! Using Common Core terminology such as theme, plot, and point of view, this game will hold your students’ attention as they answer questions to prove that they have not only comprehended the novel, but that they have also connected to the novel and formed opinions about it. Printable “Instructions for Play” sheets are included (13, 14) as well as a game board and sets of X’s and O’s tokens (15-17). There are printable question cards (18-22) and a blank page of question cards so you can write your own comprehension questions (23).
Timed Trivia pg. 23-25
Display the “Trivia” sign (24) in your classroom so students know where to go to play Timed Trivia. Using a timer, blank trivia cards (26), and dry-erase markers, students will read the instructions sheet (25), write their own fact trivia based on the novel, and answer the trivia to find one winner.
