All THREE Reading Challenges bundled together! Motivating students to read during their breaks can be challenging. As teachers, we worry about the loss of time in the classroom. Here is a fun way to encourage your students to read during their Fall Break, Spring Break, or those unexpected Snow Days AND get their parents involved!
These Challenges allow you to set a number-of-minutes goal for your class. Both the Snow Days and Fall Break challenges include higher-order thinking questions for parents to ask their children about their reading and record their responses. Students love making their parents do their homework! The Spring Break challenge allows students to chose their favorite place or person and read there to complete the challenge.
In my classroom, students return these challenges and receive a reading reward. These may include extra independent reading time, a bookmark, the chance to read to a younger grade, or the opportunity to choose a book using a Scholastic book coupon.
