I created this reading choice board (3 of 4) to assess my middle school student's understanding of their self-selected reading on days I couldn't meet one one one with them. The way I use them is by using a date stamp with a RECEIVED line on it.
So here is how it would work on a typical reading choice board day:
1. Students read for 10-15 minutes at the beginning of class.
2. Students pull out their reading choice boards when I call time.
3. I take 5 or more oral responses a day if time permits.
4. After students respond orally, they bring their boards to my desk where I stamp with the day's date using the RECEIVED stamp.
5. They then fill in the book's title for the book the talked about in class on the RECEIVED line. You can initial off to the side if you want to verify you or another teacher stamped it.
6. Students keep their choice boards for the nine week's grading period. They are collected for quiz grades at the end of the grading period.
Students are responsible for keeping up with their choice boards and making sure they give accurate, thorough responses to the prompts (in each box). Teachers are responsible for keeping any notes about their retells or recollection of details (anecdotal records) and stamping. You can do this as a whole class or this can be done as a monitoring piece to your in class independent reading program.
The benefit to whole class is that other kids can hear about books and add them to their own reading wish lists!
