If you have not discovered the author Chris VanAllsburg, then now it the time! He is a super artist and author who writes creatively and sparks the imagination. Using inference in many of his works, the reader is engaged in thoughtful reflections and questions as they read! What a win win situation for you and your students.
This artist is very realistic and makes the worlds of his imagination appear possible. In this workbook you will find the following to help your students enjoy his books while accomplishing the common core lessons you need! And if you are homeschooling and not specifically using common core, you will find the lessons practical and useful in many ways too.
~ Inference Cards for The Sweetest Fig, The Stranger and Probuditi!
* Make Connections for understanding (including text to self, text to text, and text to world references) The Witches Broom is used for this lesson.
# Creative Storytelling using THEMES and group work will spark the imagination with the book of The Mysterious Harris Burdick. Students will be exploring theme, setting and using visual clues from illustrations to guide their work. Included is a reflection rubric for students to score how well they have accomplished the goals. I find this to be a great way for students to self-check too!
~Zathura is a super novel with great vocabulary words for a nice review of syllables and phonetics. In addition practicing the vocabulary with a matching worksheet is good for them to add to their working vocabulary.
Using the creative world of space, the students are guided into designing their own gameboard!
*Queen of the Falls is one book that the author wrote based on a true story. The miraculous story of the first person to go over Niagara Falls and survive! Due to the nature of the book, it is a great novel to study comparison of texts between primary sources and the novel. Another great literary tool is to explore figures of speech in this work!
Finally a list of Chris VanAllsburg's books are included with their corresponding Accelerated Reading number and point value for your convenience.
An answer key is provided.
And the Grade 4 Common Core are also included for your ease of reviewing!
To end with a review of the syllables rules for pronunciation are listed.
I hope you enjoy Chris's books as much as I do! He is just too terrific not to share with your class!
