Authors write to give information, present a point of view (persuade) or to entertain. This packet engages students in all three areas. Rabbits is a nonfiction article with facts about rabbits and bolded vocabulary. Boxing Bunny is a narrative taken from a “small moment” in the author’s life and meant as entertainment. There is also a poem about the subject to further enhance the student’s exposure to information embedded in different styles of writing. Rabbits in the wild were contrasted with domesticated rabbits as pets in the different writings. Although rabbits raised, hunted or trapped as a food source is an important aspect of discussion, it is mentioned, but not developed in this packet.
Rabbits presents an opportunity for instruction in the characteristics of nonfiction such as title, author, headings, illustrations and vocabulary with embedded definitions. The current trend is to encourage students to read at least 50% nonfiction, but students are also often asked to respond to fiction writing. Seemingly, most difficult for students is the interpretation of writing in a poetic form. Students get exposure to and opportunities to respond to all three forms of writing in this packet.
Comprehension is enhanced in the main idea, noticing details, cause and effect and fact or opinion exercises. There is an assessment included which is based upon the nonfiction article, Rabbits. The writing prompts suggested are based upon the experiences of the students. Word work can be found in the crossword and vocabulary matching worksheets. Creative and artistic participation is provided in the illustration areas of some of the worksheets.
The vocabulary cards provide an extension activity for the vocabulary included in the unit.
- Small group: at centers for matching or concentration games.
- Large group: Each student receives a card in random order. Students mingle with each other comparing cards until they find the matching card. Then each pair stands back to back to show that they have completed the search. Teacher checks or students read their pair of cards aloud depending upon the time element.
For an individual project, the pages of this packet can be stapled into a 12” x 18” piece of construction paper for each student to create his/her own cover.
Your media center should have a selection of books to enhance this topic or expand to other animals. Students could be encourage to work on group or individual research projects. The packet can be expanded to a unit of study in science by providing fiction and nonfiction reading materials for the study of food chains, survival behaviors, habitats and the influence of humans on the habitats.
