What educators are saying
Description
Are you looking for reading comprehension activities that teach students to summarize while learning about an important figure in Black History and sports? This resource includes text dependent questions, two summarizing activities, and Task Cards to teach prepositional phrases based on the book The United States v. Jackie Robinson. This engaging picture book will hook your students, and you'll love how easy it is to teach essential reading comprehension skills like summarizing. Just print at teach OR assign through EASEL! This resource includes both formats!
Most people know that Jackie Robinson was a pivotal figure in ending segregation in sports. But not everyone knows that Jackie Robinson also fought segregation in the military - and won! This picture book tells the story of Jackie's childhood and time serving in World War I. Jackie was court-martialed for sitting in the middle of a bus, but he won his case! Throughout it all, Jackie maintained the same dignity and grace that he would later display on the baseball field when he broke that color barrier.
This resource focuses on the key comprehension strategy of summarizing and builds language skills by teaching students about prepositional phrases. There are two summarazing activities so you can easily differentiate! Task 1 gives students an opportunity to choose the most important events and practice sequencing. Task 2 is an analysis task, and students analyze 2 written summaries for their strengths and weaknesses. Differentiate the tasks you assign your students OR use both with the whole class. You have options!
The resource also builds language skills with preposition practice Task Cards and a student handout. The Task Cards include a fun, baseball-themed riddle and give students the opportunity to practice identifying prepositional phrases AND identifying the function that they play. All of the text on the Task Cards comes from the picture book.
And, there are Text Dependent Questions that are perfect for a formative assessment OR homework!
