Close Reading Comprehension Color-Coding Text Evidence Grade 3, Grade 4, Grade 5
Color Code Comprehension Reading Activities are a unique approach to addressing critical Common Core reading skills. The packet includes fifteen carefully crafted articles along with supportive color-coding comprehension activities.
The unique color-coding system promotes student accountability. Students must justify the answers they give by identifying the contextual information in the articles that support their conclusions by using colored pencils to shade. Not only is this an effective method for promoting and improving comprehension, but it is fun and engaging as well.
Students need four colored pencils (red, orange, green, blue). After students carefully read an article, they will go to the corresponding comprehension activity page and read the questions and choices. Each question is assigned a code color. Students must go back to the article and search for contextual clues that support their answers. They underline or shade the supportive information in the color assigned to that particular question. They continue to do the same for each of the questions on the comprehension page.
Complete answer keys are provided in this packet; however, it should be understood that the shading may vary from student to student as they determine which contextual clues were important to them for determining the correct answer. Therefore, flexibility is needed.
