Assessing reading comprehension can be time consuming and take away valuable instruction time. These cards were developed to assess students in an unobtrusive way using any book or passage. They are also leveled so you can individualize the questions for different reading groups. One deck is for below grade level students. If you use Marzano Scales, these are Level 2 questions. The other half of the deck is for on and above grade level learners. These are considered Level 3 questions. I include a checklist to record data. I use these cards all year long and they give me an excellent grasp of where students are with character, sequence and summary, nonfiction text structures, inference and drawing conclusions, main idea, cause and effect, using textual evidence, and vocabulary development.
