This is a fun bingo style game where students can practice their reading comprehension skills. Students read a short fictional reading and then try to answer questions about the article using question words like who, what, when, where, why, how, and how much/many to form bingo lines.
There are a total of 10 different readings and each reading consists of 24 questions on the bingo sheets. Here is the way that I normally play the game: Each student will receive a reading (which includes the bingo sheet on the same page) and everyone reads the article at the same time. Students then compete to see who can get a bingo line first. I usually start where any bingo line can be formed (diagonally, vertical, or horizontal). Students can decide how they want to form their bingo lines. For example: one student might try to form a horizontal line while another student tries to form a vertical bingo. After a bingo line is formed, the teacher can tell the class to try and form a certain shape on their bingo sheets. For example: an “X” or a “T”. Eventually the teacher can tell the class to form a blackout where all of the questions need to be answered.
You can play this bingo game individually in class or have small groups solve it together, or you could even give it as homework and tell the students that they need to find one bingo line on Monday, then Tuesday another bingo line, and another on Wednesday, etc. You can easily adapt this game in various ways depending on the time that you have and the level of your students.
The bingo sheets are all the same, but again, the students can decide which questions they want to answer first to get a bingo. However, I’ve included my original Word documents that I made these bingo sheets in case you want to move the questions around so that students have different bingo sheets. This purchase includes the 10 readings in the Word format, and a PDF format for easy printing, an answer key for all of the reading questions, and a document that elaborates the instructions of different ways the game can be played.
This is a great resource to help your students reinforce their reading comprehension and it does so in a fun interactive way.
Here are the titles of each of the readings:
“A Dog’s Best Friends”
“Nature vs. Electronics”
“The Big Game”
“The Long Journey Home”
“The Past is the Past”
“The Traveling Penguin”
“Unlucky Birthday Party”
