This resource is a WONDERFUL way to get into your students' minds and know what they are thinking while they are reading! This bookmark includes:
finding interesting words
questions that they have while reading
identifying facts and opinions in the story
describing characters' traits
identifying inferences that they are making
This tool can be used in a number of different ways! One way I use it most often in my classroom is:
during the first whole group reading of our reading story, students can stop at anytime and add to the front of their bookmark, recording any thinking that they are doing about interesting words, connections, or questions that they may have. Afterwards they record a GIST, in 10 words or less about the story. During the second independent reading of the story, students focus on the back of the bookmark, identifying character traits and inferences, and finding facts and opinions throughout the story. At the end, they record a more detailed summary of the story.
I have also used this in small groups, where students can share their ideas with others as they read together.
I usually copy front to back, so that each student has a half sheet that can be used as a bookmark until turned in.
