REVISED- This unit is CCSS aligned, and it was designed to offer lots of opportunity for first graders to practice the skills of comparing and contrasting while reading about interesting, and somewhat familiar, animals. Included in this unit are informational texts about 5 pairs of animals that people often mistake for one another, but they really are not! The animals presented are: lions and tigers, monkeys and apes, tortoises and turtles, alligators and crocodiles, and frogs and toads.
Facts are given for each animal in the pair, depicting similarities and differences between the two. Then, students will recall and write in a graphic organizer, the facts that are unique to each animal, and some that are common to both. There is also a writing piece for each pair of animals, posing a fun question that will elicit the students' opinion.
