Cookie Cause and Effect
This Cookie Match with Anchor Charts and Frames can be used to teach or reinforce Cause and Effect with first or second graders. The cookies are written in kid friendly language. It can be used as a Literacy Center where children match the cookies and then write the sentences on the sentence sheet provided or it can be used in a whole group to explain Cause and Effect. In my experience I found that children understand the concept better if you provide examples using the word “so” or “because”. For example: something happens so this happens. The girl fell off her bike so she had to go to the hospital or this happens because something else happened. The girl went to the hospital because she fell off her bike. (At times I even get myself confused…so just imagine the children!) This activity will definitely allow your students to “get-it.”
The anchor sheets provide examples. This sheet can be copied onto a Smart Board for all to see or used in small group. These examples will support children’s thinking. The blank “so” and “because” sheets can be used for children to find examples in books they read individually or to differentiate instruction. Those children who need more structure or support can use the cookie and sheet while the others can make up their own. Any way you do this activity, it will support your students in learning and/or reinforcing the concept of Cause and Effect!
