What is the Kindergarten Reading Comprehension Curriculum

The comprehensive Kindergarten reading comprehension curriculum is made up of 36 weekly books. Each book comes with four lesson plans. This packet includes the second 9 weeks of the curriculum.

This discussion-based curriculum is designed to teach the CCSS Literature, Informational Text, and Speaking & Listening standards.

The lessons for each book are broken down into 4 components:

•Preparing and Predicting

•Reading and Understanding

•Reading and Deepening Understanding

•Retelling and Beyond the Text

Throughout the curriculum, students will be exposed a variety of reading comprehension strategies through non-fiction and fiction texts. Building vocabulary will hold a strong focus throughout the curriculum. Therefore, students will gain a deeper understanding of what they are reading. Furthermore, students will learn to make connections between what they are reading and what they already know, while thinking deeply about what they have read.

Class Discussion will also play a key element in this reading comprehension curriculum. To support class discussion, the books in this curriculum have been carefully chosen to focus on both literary skills and cross circular connections. Revisiting concepts gives opportunities for students to build vocabulary and deepen learning.

Finally, a fun learning craft will culminate each unit as students revisit the skills and strategies they learned during the week.
