This product contains a zipped folder with two separate products that can be used in collaboration. The first product is a 40 page juvenile fiction story titled Maisy and the Missing Mice and the second is a 20 page teacher resource activity book. This is perfect if you are following the new PARCC model for assessments and need a "long text", but don't have time for a much longer text.

Note that the story itself (minus the TPT exclusive educational content) is also available on Amazon as a Kindle book and a print book . It is also available as an audio book. If you get the audio book, you can save your voice, let the kids listen in center groups, or even let them whisper read while listening to a fluent reader.

The fiction story is a mystery about a 4th grade detective named Maisy. You can view the first three chapters of the book and the "About the Author" in the downloadable preview. You can view images of the teacher resource activities in the preview images.

The activity book contains 19 activity pages for use with the fiction story, Maisy and the Missing Mice.

The activity book contains vocabulary words and vocabulary templates. It also contains a specific skill to be studied during small segments of chapters. For each segment of chapters there is a mini lesson page and a standardized test practice page, which contains two to three questions. These activities were designed to be completed as a whole class or small group instructional activities to provide guided practice. However, you could have students use them as independent practices, depending on your students' needs.

The skills covered include making inferences, cause and effect, sequencing, and comparing and contrasting.

There are also summative activities that involve analyzing story elements. Students describe characters, sequence plot events, identify problems and solutions, and describe the setting. There is a final 10 question assessment that is structured like a standardized test and includes all previously mentioned skills.

You can read the story in segments as a class, complete the mini lesson together and then let students work independently or in small groups as they complete the standardized test practice page. But, you can use the resources to best fit your needs. You could also create your own activities to go along with the stories if that is better for your needs.

The story will take no more than two hours total to read. You can complete the entire story and activity packet in one week. Or, you could stagger it and complete it over longer periods of time.
