Description

Types of figurative language included: simile, metaphor, idiom, alliteration, onomatopoeia, hyperbole, and personification

If your students are anything like mine, they take everything literally. They are often surprised that words or sayings can have a figurative meaning.

This resource is NOT a simple “identify the figurative language” resource. Your students will have to go deeper and interpret meaning, write their own figures of speech based on the text (transfer), and expand and develop figurative comparisons using metaphors and similes of their own. I’ve differentiated each text so you can meet the needs of each reader in your class.

This resource includes everything you will need to practice figurative language with your students! I’ve included THREE DIFFERENT LEVELS OF EACH PASSAGE for you to easily differentiate in your classroom! There are also short-answer and multiple choice questions for your students to practice figurative language.

**A digital version is also included for use with Google Classroom.**

With the digital version, you have the option to go 100% paperless.

Included in this resource:

Leveled Passages

This resource contains ten differentiated fiction passages. There are three levels of each passage so you can easily differentiate with your students. The levels are based on word count and Lexile levels, which can be found in the top left corner of each passage.

Combination of Short-Answer and Multiple Choice Questions

Each passage has a combination of multiple choice and short-answer questions that will help students to define, identify, interpret, and write different figures of speech including similes, metaphors, idioms, onomatopoeia, hyperbole, personification, and alliteration.

Detailed Answer Keys
