Description

The ability to analyze story elements aids in reading comprehension, leads to a deeper understanding of literature, and helps students develop and write their own stories. As teachers, we want students to understand a story arc or events that happen in the beginning, middle, and end of a story. Students should understand that authors often begin a story by introducing and developing the characters and setting, introduce a conflict and action to build tension and interest, and conclude a story with a climax that resolves the conflict. The goal of this resource is to help your students practice these skills to identify and analyze different story elements.

I've included THREE DIFFERENT LEVELS OF EACH PASSAGE for you to easily differentiate in your classroom!

Included in this resource:

Leveled Passages

This resource contains ten differentiated fiction passages. There are three levels of each passage so you can easily differentiate with your students. The levels are based on word count and Lexile levels, which can be found in the top left corner of each passage.

Combination of Short-Answer and Multiple-Choice Questions

Each passage contains a set of questions that include a combination of short-answer and multiple-choice questions, as well as charts and a graphic organizer for students to complete.

The questions become increasingly complex as students progress through the resource. Initially, students are to refer to parts of the story and utilize specific terms (plot, setting, characters, conflict, resolution/solution, key event, beginning, middle, and end of story) when identifying and analyzing different parts of the story. As they progress through this resource, students will be required to infer the conflict, setting, and plot elements from details in the story. Eventually, students will have to explain, for example, why one event develops a certain plot element (e.g., conflict, resolution, rising action vs falling action, etc.). In addition, instead of beginning, middle, and end, students must identify parts of the exposition, rising action, falling action, and resolution of the story and explain how the author develops those different parts.

Detailed Answer Keys

Answer keys with detailed example responses are provided with every set of questions.
