These comprehension cards are perfect for reading response journals. The reference cards are stored in the front of the journal. Students can simply pull out the card they need and return it when they are finished writing their response to the text.
Each card teaches a skill on the front and gives sentence stems to help students in their responses to the text they have read. On the back of the cards are additional information or helping points for each skill. The skills covered on these reference cards are: characters, plot, setting, theme, asking questions, point of view, predicting, visualizing, making connections, text structure, inferring, and writing a summary.
I teach each skill separately and add the card to the pocket as I teach about it. That card can then be used multiple times throughout the year. Having the card right there as they are responding to the text aids in the students writing a complete response.
